Palace And Residence Strategy

A common question is whether to build a Palace or Residence in your first village.

Before I outline the build strategy, there are some important things you must know :-

  • A Palace has 3 expansion slots, whereas a Residence has only 2.
  • A Palace has an expansion slot at L10, L15 and L20, whereas Residence is at L10 and L20.
  • A Palace costs a lot more than Residence at the first expansion slot, but at the 2nd and 3rd expansion slot, it is cheaper than a Residence slot 2. See table below.

Table of costs per expansion slot :-

Residence

lvl Lumber Clay Iron Crop Total Cost Per Expansion
10 22380 17760 13515 6945 60600 60600
20 286640 227345 172980 88955 775920 387960

Palace

lvl Lumber Clay Iron Crop Total Cost Per Expansion
10 21230 30880 28950 9645 90705 90705
15 77720 113050 105985 35325 332080 166040
20 271825 395375 370670 123555 1161425 387142

As you can see, an expansion slot at Residence L10 is cheaper, but at the 2nd and 3rd expansion slot, the Palace is actually cheaper than a Residence.

Therefore, you can use Residence L10 to found a new village.

When your new village is found, then build another Residence L10 in your new village and found your next village from it. Rinse and repeat, so theoretically you never need to build past Residence L10.

L10 → L10 → L10 → L10

It is cheaper this way and many players use this expansion strategy.

But there are exceptions to the rule. The exception is when building your capital. You will need to build a Palace to move your capital, but don’t settle any village from it.

Here is an example build order :-

  1. Build Residence L10 in first village.
  2. Settle a second village.
  3. Build Residence L10 in second village.
  4. Settle on a 15 cropper for capital.
  5. Build Residence L20 from the first or second village.
  6. Settle the next village from Residence L20 (step 5).

Never settle any villages from your capital.

When all croplands in your 15 cropper village reaches L10, build a Palace and change it to your capital. Then build up to Palace L20.

A Palace L20 has 3 expansion slots. Use it to train 3 chiefs whom will aid in conquering. But never conquer from your capital either. Use your 3 chiefs to lower loyalty and a chief from another village to complete the conquer.

Once you have trained three chiefs in your capital, demolish the Palace.

In your other village, build a Townhall L10 so you can hold a Great Celebration to aid in your conquer.

Three Chiefs in Non Capital

An advanced strategy is to train 3 chiefs in your capital.

Since you can only have one Palace at a time, demolish your Palace and build it again in another village. Train another 3 chiefs in your new village, and then demolish the Palace and build it again in another village.

This way, you can have 3 chiefs in multiple villages which is very handy in lowering loyalty when conquering.

Remember, the cost of an expansion slot in a Palace L20 is the same as that in a Residence L20. So it is not considered expensive to build multiple Palace L20.

You can build your palace in another village, but your capital does not move as long as you don’t designate it as your capital. Just remember that before you demolish your Palace in your capital, build a Stonemason first because a Palace L3 is a prerequisite for Stonemason.

With 3 chiefs and a Townhall L10 with great celebration, you only need 2 villages to complete a conquer. A further advantage is it catches your opponent offguard, because most players expect 6 chiefs from 3 villages to complete a conquer.

Best of all, if you wanted to know, the 3 chiefs is considered to have 3 expansion slots, so you can conquer 3 villages if you wanted to.

So there you have it. A sound strategy and a little known advanced strategy for Palace and Residence.

When you build Palace to lv.20 and train 3 cheifs, then demolish the Palace, you can still conquer 3 villages? I was always under the impression that once you demolish the Palace, you can’t conquer any villages until you build it back up. Please clarify this.

    Thanks

Can we build residence L20 in one village & then demolish it & then build palace L20 in it.

  3. seaner says:

why should you never settle from your capital?

    • admin says:

You can settle from you capital if you don’t want to conquer. If you want play aggressively, then don’t settle from your capital. Having 3 chiefs in your capital is really handy when doing hostile conquer.

The hardcopy book is available only on Amazon. But the softcopy is already published here, on this site that you’re reading now.

  5. Andre says:

Suppose that you built Residence lv10, train settlers/chiefs and settle/conquer a new village.
Can you demolish the Residence, build Palace lv20 and still train 3 other chiefs? That would give you 4 expansion slots for one village, never tried it…
Still, even if you can’t get all 3, can you get at least 2 other expansion slots? Or once you expand from the Residence you must then expand a second time from your Residence, thus having only 2 expansion slots from that village?
Just one more thing: if you build Palace and then Stonemason in one village, then demolish Palace and build it on another village, can you build a second Stonemason?
Thanks in advance. Really useful site you got here, much appreciated.

You can demo the Res, build Palace to lvl 20, but you can only train 2 other chiefs (since the 1st one has already been used).
A palace lvl 20 have 3 expansion slots, and a resi have only 2. But remember you can only have 1 palace in your kingdom at any one time. So you also need to demo your palace if you want to build it in another village.
Stone mason cannot be built in a non-capital. If your capital already have SM, and if you switch your capital, the stone mason will automatically be demolished.

  6. dave says:

does demolishing the palace and rebuilding it elsewhere have any effect on the resource field levels e.g if levels in cap are at 16 can they still be upgraded to 17 and above

    • admin says:

Demolishing palace have nothing to do with your resource fields. You can still level them up as normal. Your resource fields in capital are only affected if you SWITCH capital.

      • dave says:

Thanks for reply. Just one more thing how high can I raise wheat fields, when I’ve changed capital and then demolished palace and rebuilt it in another village but not changed capital again, can I get them above level 15. Hope this is clear question

        • Anon says:

In capital, crop fields may be raised maximum up to level 19. In a non-capital, the highest level is 10. Remember you may only have 1 capital at any one time.

  7. noobie says:

can u explain me this plz?
i have lvl 20 residese in my capital and i alredy settled 2 villages!
can i demolish the residense ans build palace and train 3 chiefs?

    • admin says:

No you can’t. You can build a palace to lvl 20, but at levels 10 and 15, you can’t train a chief (because you already settled from your residence). At level 20, you can train 1 chief.

  8. Tbbt says:

There are many players that I know who go on madly making more and more villages, without even their first village stabilizing. Is that a sound thing to try? I personally prefer making sure my other villages are good enough to support my new village before I build another village, so that my other village production do not get affected.

Which one of those will you prefer, and why?

    • admin says:

I prefer the former (mad expansion). Its the same 4x strategy (explore expand exploit and exterminate). That can’t be done with conservative game play.

      • tbbt says:

And what will be the definite advantages between these two expansion strategies?

And when should I start making my residence in my new village, for the mad expansion strategy?

        • admin says:

The definite advantage is you don’t end up as somebody’s farm. On one end of the scale is a conservative style – akin to a simmer. On the other end is the aggressive player, or as you coined it, the mad expander. I could not have end up as a top attacker, top defender, top overall player, top robber, on the server if I played conservatively.
On when you should expand – you need to focus on culture points. Please see the section on Culture Points, under Advanced Strategies.

    • Safe expander says:

I prefer building my first village to fields at 7-7-7-10 with bonus buildings at 3 before settling my second. Usually this means the good croppers nearby are gone, so I take another 4-4-4-6 or 4-4-3-7 (I usually play Gauls) and push almost 100% of my first vil’s production until both fields are the sane level, then get fields even higher, then build an army and fight over the cropper.

  9. nerd says:

You said you shouldn’t settle from the capital if you want to play aggressively – but i’d prefer waiting till the other village grows more before conquering.
So, build palace to level 20, settle, demolish palace, build it in other village and have 3 chiefs.
Is this possible, if it is are there any drawbacks?
